14 new restaurants opening this summer in Westchester, Rockland
Rockland/Westchester Journal News
Construction and equipment delays, permits, inspections and that all-important liquor license are, in some cases, what causes restaurants to open later than they expected. Here are updates on a few we reported on earlier this year, along with a few newcomers, that are coming soon.
Patisserie Salzburg, Rye
Par Shakiban said as soon as he gets the all-clear for his final inspection, he’ll open immediately. The popular patisserie, a longtime fixture on Rye’s Purchase Street, will feature the same baked goods, quiches, pastries and sandwiches — just in a more modern spot around the corner. Be on the lookout: 5 Second St., Rye, 914-921-4458, patisseriesalzburg.com
The Halal Guys, Yonkers, White Plains
Westchester is about to go from zero to two Halal Guys locations by the end of August (fingers crossed). The first location for this Middle Eastern cuisine will be at The Galleria in White Plains and should open by mid-August. The second spot, set to open by the end of August, will be in Yonkers’ Highridge Plaza. According to Director of Operations Joseph Hafez, a third may be coming to New Rochelle. Be on the lookout: 100 Main St., White Plains; also at 1789 Central Park Ave., Yonkers, thehalalguys.com
Tipsy Taco Bar, Mount Kisco
A soft opening is scheduled for July 19 for this new taco restaurant featuring eight different tacos along with inventive cocktails and a variety of tequilas. Owner Milton Torres, who’s worked in the restaurant business for 15 years (some may know him from managing Scalini Osteria in Bronxville), is also emphasizing his “not tacos” menu items, including salads, tostados, quesadillas, pan-seared market fish, carne asada, grilled salmon and skirt steak. Be on the lookout: 487 Main St., 914-218-3460
Burgerim, Dobbs Ferry
It’s all about mini burger pattys that are slightly larger than your standard slider at burgerim, a fast casual franchise set to open in another two to three weeks at Rivertowns Square in Dobbs Ferry. The first Westchester location — the chain is nationwide — opened in Mamaroneck in May. Among the patty options: beef, steak, chicken, Wagyu, lamb and vegetarian along with toppings that range from cheese and avocado to pineapple. Be on the lookout: 18 Hamilton St., Dobbs Ferry, burgerim.com
Fatt Root, Pleasantville
Chef Mogan Anthony and executive chef William Eschner are gearing up to open Fatt Root, a fast casual 40-seat eatery in Pleasantville highlighting multi-ethnic Asian street food by the end of August. The restaurant takes over the spot formerly occupied by Pony Express. In the meantime, you can see teasers on their Instagram page. Anthony and Escher, by the way, recently opened Locali in Mount Kisco. Be on the lookout: 11 Wheeler Ave., Pleasantville.
Fogo de Chão Brazilian Steakhouse, White Plains
Late summer remains the target date for his 15,000-square-foot ode to Southern Brazil. The international chain has locations throughout the U.S. including in Manhattan, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Washington, D.C. and is known for its market-fresh salads and array of grilled steak, fire-roasted chicken and seafood, all cooked with a Brazilian twist. Goosefeather, Tarrytown
Dale Talde, known for his appearances on “Top Chef” as well as for his now closed restaurant Talde in Park Slope, Brooklyn, will open his first in Westchester, a modern Chinese place by late summer. The 80-seat eatery, with an outdoor garden and bar, will highlight the trifecta of Hong Kong cuisine: BBQ, noodles and dumplings. Talde will also utilize produce from an on-site garden that will offer over 40 varietals of vegetables and herbs. Be on the lookout: 49 E. Sunnyside Lane, Tarrytown, 914-591-8200, tarrytownhouseestate.com

At night, it will transition into a wine bar complete with craft beer and a dinner menu. Be on the lookout: 50 Nepperhan St., Yonkers
OKO, Rye
Somers native Brian Lewis, founding chef at the Bedford Post Inn, is on target to open a 50-seat restaurant in Rye sometime (ideally) before the end of the summer. The restaurant will highlight traditional Japanese cuisine and Nigiri sushi and feature a traditional Omakase menu. Be on the lookout: 29 Purchase St., Rye, okokitchen.com
UP Lounge & Restaurant, Nyack
The three-story venue, which previously had been Harbor Hill, is, according to owner Rachel Karwaski, meant to be more of “an experience, with craft cocktails, upscale food and live music.” Open July 18. Go: 91 Main St., Nyack, 845-535-3266, uploungeny.com
Palo Vivo, Hastings-on-Hudson
Twists on South American classics are the focus at Palo Vivo, a tri-level restaurant with a rooftop bar. That means flame to table barbacoa (aka barbecue), curated cocktails dedicated to Latin spirits and an atmosphere that’s part destination, part oasis. The owners hope to be open by October. Roxy’s Diner Bar & Grill, Port Chester
The first week in August is the target opening for this modern diner and bar in the space that had been Rela Cafe. Expect traditional American food with a twist with dishes such as short rib grilled cheese with truffle gouda, lobster potato skins, Tomahawk steak and eggs, and a milkshake bar. The 250-seat restaurant is owned by Demetri Argyros, Spiro Argyros and Billy Michialis. Sprios Argyros owns Ardsley Diner while Michialis owns Bella’s Diner & Restaurant in Tarrytown as well as Ardsley Diner. Be on the lookout: 25 S. Regent St., Port Chester.

Co-owner Jon Fernandez some said food will be made with in-house beer. Be on the lookout: 132 Main St., Nyack.
And still unnamed
Christina and Matt Safarowic, the husband and wife team behind The Whitlock in Katonah have taken over the KR Cafe, just down the block. No date — and no name yet — for this all day cafe but, according to Christina Safarowic, folks can expect menu items similar to what you’d find at a classic luncheonette including pancakes, eggs, BLTs and matza ball soup. They are planning an August/September opening. Be on the lookout: 63 Katonah Ave., Katonah.
